The District:

The Brunswick Sewer District (BSD) is a quasi‑municipal not‑for‑profit corporation chartered in 1947 by state legislature and charged with responsibility for collection, pumping, treatment, and disposal of municipal wastewater.

District Organization:

The District is organized into four divisions, each having separate responsibilities.

The Collection Division comprises approximately fifty miles of sanitary sewer gravity and pressure mains.  Storm and sanitary sewers were separated in 1955.  There are no known combined sewer overflows.

The Pumping Division is made up of eighteen wastewater pumping stations ranging in size from 100 to 1,500 gallons per minute.

The Treatment Operations Division includes a single primary and secondary level plant designed for 3.85 mgd (million gallons daily) average and 11.1 mgd peak daily flows.  The Division is also responsible for utilization of municipal wastewater sludge generated in the treatment process.

The three operations divisions are supported by an Administrative Division responsible for general accounting and recordkeeping.

Source of Flow:

The majority of District flows originate in the Town of Brunswick, Maine

By agreements with the United States Navy and the Topsham Sewer District, BSD facilities receive and treat flows originating at Naval Air Station Brunswick and the Town of Topsham, Maine as well

Plant facilities by permit also accept and treat septic and holding tank waste from several area communities.
